0097 – The Great Escape – Part V – Weilun (Scene Ia – Aid Station – The Parking Garage – Firefight! - Turn 1)

0915 07 AUG 2000, Weilun, Poland
============================
From one second to the other, everything changed. The guards drew down on us and the we returned the favor. Some of the civvies trapped between us hit the ground screaming, others ran away doing the same.
Klasha and Potato started some song and dance but that did not go well, apparently. Civvies were pushed aside as the guards moved to grab Klasha. We figured the day had gone to hell anyway, so why stop now.
Bullets started flying after that.
So the team has hit a snag. One of the guards has recognized Klasha as an intelligence agent. The question is how the team will continue. The idea was to bluff their way through. That will not happen now.
The first possibility would be that the team try to convince the guards that the Klasha was somehow working with a Soviet unit.
Klasha, with the help of Potato, tell the guards that Klasha has been with their unit for over a year, realizing that the Soviet forces controls all of Central Europe and is Klasha’s best chance for survival. The guards are probably not disposed to just believe the story.
[GME: Will the guards buy into the story presented by Klasha and Potato? - Chaos Rank 6Very Unlikely (45%) - 57% - No]
So, that is another plan down the drain. It does not, however, necessarily mean that they will take action.
[GME: Will the guards attempt to detain Klasha? - Chaos Rank 650/50 (65%) - 40% - Yes]
The guards move forward to grab Klasha and the team has a choice to make: fight or flight. Their cover has been blown so leaving is just not an option. Guess someone might have to die.
There are nine civilians in the area. I will give them an equal chance of running from the area(1-50) or remaining in place (51-100). If they flee, they will attempt to leave the map by the closest exit. The results are:
  • Civilian 1 – remains in place
  • Civilian 2 – remains in place
  • Civilian 3 – flees
  • Civilian 4 – flees
  • Civilian 5 – flees
  • Civilian 6 – remains in place
  • Civilian 7 – remains in place
  • Civilian 8 – flees
  • Civilian 9 – flees
Civilians caught in the crossfire maybe hit as per the rules. It is an area with a lot of metal and concrete. A ricochet is definitely possible.
If caught in the blast of an explosive weapon or automatic fire, they may be hit normally. If a round is fired over them and misses, they may be hit but the difficulty level is one level higher, as they are not the intended target.
The guards hiding behind the wrecks have cover from the abdomen down, as do the characters in Can-Can, with the exception of Wally (acting as commander) and Harris (acting as gunner), as both of them have full cover.
No one is surprised by the encounter. Not let the fireworks begin.

Initiative Step 5

Actions:
  • Robinson will fire 5 single-shots at Experienced Polish guard #2-3 with his AKR (Modified initiative: Agl 7 – Bulk 2 = 5)
  • Griffin will fire one round from his Vz-54 at Veteran Polish guard #2-1 (Modified initiative: Agl 6 – Bulk 5 = 1)
  • Potato will fire 5 single-shots from his RPK-74 at Experienced Polish guard #2-4 (Modified initiative: Agl 4 – Bulk 5 = -1)
Robinson swings his AKR over to point at the guard and lets off fire quick shots. The range is Short.
[Fire five quick shots at Experienced Polish guard #2-3 – Asset Level 9Difficult (x1) – Target Number 9 – Roll(s): 15,16,14,9,5] – Two rounds hit.
The first round hits the guard in the right leg (6) and the second hits him in the left arm (3), for a total of 9. The guard is knocked down and he panics for two turns.
Three rounds missed their intended target and Robinson is shooting by civilian 7. We need to check for hits.
[Misses possibly hitting civilian 7 – Asset Level 9Formidable (x1/2) – Target Number 4 – Roll(s): 5,4,7] – Unfortunately one round hits the civilian. The target is prone and facing away from the shooter.
The round hits the civilian in the right leg for 6, the civilian is knocked down and their initiative reduced to 0. Collateral damage. That is not good.
Griffin fires a quick shot at at Veteran Polish guard #2-1. The range here is also Short.
[Fire one quick shot at Veteran Polish guard #2-1 – Asset Level 13Difficult (x1) – Target Number 13 – Roll(s): 18] – Miss
The round will also pass by civilian 7. He may be hit again.
[Misses possibly hitting civilian 7 – Asset Level 13Formidable (x1/2) – Target Number 6 – Roll(s): 6] – Unfortunately the round hits the civilian. The target is prone and facing away from the shooter.
The round hits the target in the abdomen, causing 16 points of damage, for a total of 22 points of damage. The NPC is seriously wounded.

[Fire five quick shots at Experienced Polish guard #2-4 – Asset Level 16Difficult (x1) – Target Number 16 – Roll(s): 18,7,13,10,8] – Four hits.
The rounds hit the guard in the abdomen (3 + 1 blunt trauma), right leg (10), left arm (5) and the right leg (7) again. The total damage is 26 and the guard is seriously wounded. His initiative is reduced to 0, taking him out of the fight.
One round misses its target and passes over civilian 6.
[Misses possibly hitting civilian 6 – Asset Level 16Formidable (x1/2) – Target Number 8 – Roll(s): 16] – The round misses.

Initiative Step 4

Actions:
  • Veteran Soviet soldier #6-1 will move to cover behind the wreck on the right flank (Modified initiative: Agl 7 = 7)
  • Veteran Soviet Doctor #6-8 will run from the tent and take cover behind the nearby wreck (Modified initiative: Agl 7 = 7)
  • Veteran Polish guard #2-1 will throw a concussion grenade at Potato (Modified initiative: Agl 7 = 7)
  • SSG Micheal Macron will fire two single shots at Veteran Soviet soldier #6-1 (Modified initiative: Agl 4 – Bulk 10 = -1)
  • MAJ Edward Harris will fire three single rounds from the KPV at Novice Polish guard #2-5 (Modified initiative: Agl 5 – Bulk 10 = -5)
Veteran Soviet soldier #6-1 runs to the south, taking cover behind a wreck near the wall.
Veteran Soviet Doctor #6-8 leaves the tent, moving away from the firing to take cover behind a wreck.
Veteran Polish guard #2-1 pulls a concussion grenade from his web gear, tossing it toward Potato. The range is Effective.
[Throw a concussion grenade at Potato – Asset Level 13Difficult (x1) – Target Number 13 – Roll(s): 14] – Miss. The grenade deviates.
The grenade lands behind the group, to the left of Can-Can. Harris and Wally are protected by the vehicle and suffer no concussion.
Marshall, Logan and Klasha are partially exposed and take half of the concussion damage. The total damage is:
  • Marshall: 21 / 2 = 10 (rounded down). She takes 1 point to damage everywhere, but the head, chest and right arm, which take 2. She is knocked down by the blast. She now has a serious head wound but she is not stunned and does not panic. Her initiative is reduced to 0, taking her out of the fight.
  • Logan: 13 / 2 = 6 (rounded down). He takes 1 point to all locations except the left leg. The concussion, however, knocks him down.
  • Klasha: 19 / 2 = 9 (rounded down). She takes 1 point to damage everywhere, except the head, chest and abdomen, where she takes 2. She is knocked down and stunned for two rounds but does not panic. She now has a serious wound to the head.
Potato, Macron and Robinson are also caught in the concussion. Griffin is protected by the bulk of the OT-64.
  • Potato: takes 10 points of damage, with one point to each location except the head, left arm and right leg, which take two. Potato is knocked down but not stunned and he does not panic.
  • Macron: takes 9 points of damage, with one point to each location except the head and right arm, which take two. Macron is knocked down but not stunned and he does not panic. He now has a slight wound to the left arm.
  • Robinson: takes 6 points of damage, with one point to each location except the left leg, which takes none. He is not knocked down.
Finally, Civilian 6 and Experienced Polish guard #2-4 are also hit by the concussion. Civilian 6 takes 5 points of damage but they are not knocked down and there is no quick kill.
Experienced Polish guard #2-4 takes also takes 5 points of damage but they are not knocked down and there is no quick kill.
Civilian 7 is protected by the bulk of the OT-64.
Macron misses his turn, as he is knocked down.
Harris fires the KPV at the guard. The range is Short.
[Fire three quick shots at Experienced Polish guard #2-4 – Asset Level 9Difficult (x1) – Target Number 9 – Roll(s): 20,13,5] – One possible hit.
The round punches through the wreck, only slowing slight before impacting on his left leg, causing 46 points of damage. The target bleeds out soon after.
Based on our initial rules, the one of the two remaining rounds may hit a civilian (on being a 20, misses but does not result in a jam).
[Misses possibly hitting civilian 7 – Asset Level 9Formidable (x1/2) – Target Number 9 – Roll(s): 19] – Miss. Probably better, as the civilian has suffered enough.

Initiative Step 3

Actions:
  • Experienced Soviet soldier #6-2 will move to cover behind the wreck on the right flank (Modified initiative: Agl 6 = 6)
  • Experienced Soviet Nurse #6-9 will run and take cover behind the nearby wreck (Modified initiative: Agl 6 = 6)

Experienced Soviet soldier #6-2 runs to cover near his comrade, reading his weapon.
Experienced Soviet Nurse #6-9 cowers behind the wreck with the doctor.
Experienced Polish guard #2-2 fires a burst at Robinson. The range is Short.
[Fire a burst at Robinson – Asset Level 11Impossible (x1/4) – Target Number 2 – Roll(s): 16,1,19,14,4,15,16,17,5,18] – One hit.
The round hits in the right leg for 8, knocking him down this time.
Some of the rounds that miss may hit someone in the danger zone.
[Danger zone attack from automatic fire – Asset Level 11Impossible (x1/4) – Target Number 3 – Roll(s): 8,13,14,19] – All miss.

Initiative Step 1

All the novices run for cover as Wally slides over into the driver’s seat. The turn closes with the aid station personnel suffering 18% casualties (2 WIA, 1 KIA). They will begin to retreat now.
The characters will need to pick themselves up and dust themselves off now.
