0107 – The Great Escape – Part VII – Entering Zdunska Wola

 1100 08 AUG 2000, Zdunska Wola, Poland
===================================
"The mission had been going pretty badly so far and when we arrived at Zdunska Wola, our luck did not get better. It was one of those situations where you try to trick someone into thinking you are someone else and they believe you. Only then do you find out they believed it for all the wrong reasons."

Now is where we get down to the nitty-gritty. The team is here to rescue the POWs and I am hoping for their success. For those of you that have followed the story, you know that the team has forged orders about them searching for stragglers of the 5th. The general plan would be to enter the town, talk to the commander, convinve him to turn over the POWs in order for them to be transported father east to work camps.

The encounter will be several scenes invovling:

• The team entering Zdunska Wola
• Locating the prisoners
• Convincing the commander to turn over the prisoners
• Arranging transport for the prisoners, if possible
• Leaving town

Without further ado, let's get started.

Scene 7 – Entering Zdunska Wola (CR 6)

===================================

Scene Setup

The team will roll up slowly to the nearest checkpoint, the turret turned to the side witht he KPV elevated. Again, Wally (with the buk of Potato in the turret) will present the fake orders the group has recieved and insist on being let through. Once the team is let through, they will drive toward the center of town, following the signs for the train station.

With the scene setup, we need to check if the scene is altered. To do so, I roll a D10. If the roll is the Chaos Rank (CR), in this case 6, or less, the scene is altered, otherwise it plays out as planned. The roll is a 6. Since the roll is even, this means the scene is interrupted. This is like a random event, so we need and event focus and  event meaning (the action and subject).

• Event Focus: Move away from a thread
• Event Action: Deceive
• Event Subject: A path

Currently, we have one thread open, namely the main thread of the adventure. Something will distract us from that. The action (Decieve) and subject (a path) sounds like someone would give the team bad intell, maybe send them off on a wild goose chase. To get a clearer picture, we can ask a few questions of the GME.

One possibility would be that the Poles would intentionally give wrong information to a Soviet officer. Although this is possible, it would probably not be that common because of fear of repriasals. Still, we can ask.

[GME: Do the guards intentionally give the group wrong information? - Chaos Rank 6 - Unlikely (50%) - 42% - Yes]

Those lying bunch of so-and-so's. One of the things they may lie about is the location of the prisoners or the directions to the train station.

[GME: Do the guards lie about the location of the prisoners? - Chaos Rank 6 - 50/50 (65%) - 32% - Ye
s

So, they will lie about where the prisoners are. The could tell the group that the prisoners are no longer in town or give them a false location within the town.

[GME: Do the guards say the prisoners are no longer in town? - Chaos Rank 6 - 50/50 (65%) - 70% - No

The group will be sent to the wrong location then. Why would they do that? One possibility is that they want to rob the group, but that is probably unlikely, as the group does not really have anything spectucular except for one thing, Can-Can. That may be a strong motivation.

[GME: Do the Poles plan to waylay the group to get control of the OT-64? - Chaos Rank 6 - Likely (85%) - 86% - No

No, that is not their motivation. Maybe they just hate Soviets and collaborators and want to make sure they cannot threaten Poland again. Poles probably do not have the best relationship with the Soviets and last failed offensive may give the Poles the indication that the Soviet power may be crumbling.

[GME: Do the Poles plan to kill the group because they actually think they are Soviets? - Chaos Rank 6 - Somewhat likely (80%) - 70% - Yes

Ok, so it is a case of mistaken identity. We can work with that. Now we need a group of Poles that can actually threaten an OT-64. The first group should do.

-----------------------------------------------------

The unit has a/an RPG-16 with 7 rounds

The unit is mounted on horses with riding saddles.

In addition, the unit has 1 Chemical Sniffers(s) and a 1km Manpack

The have three 140mm HEAT Rifle Assault Weapon (RAW) rifle grenade and an RPG-16. That is enough to threaten an armored vehicle.

One final question for the GME.

[GME: Will the Poles open fire without warning? - Chaos Rank 6 - 50/50 (65%) - 37% - Yes

Now we can finish the scene, although this will result in combat.

Scene Resolution

The group stops at the barrier as Wally shows their paperwork. The guards kind of scowl up at Potato and the rest of the team before handing the paperwork back. "{in Polish}: the prisoners are being kept at the train station. The road ahead was damaged in the fighting. Your best bet is to take the second street on the right, it will lead you around the damage."

The sergeant snaps off a sloppy salute and returns behind the barrier.

The group moves down the street and into the ambush.
