0063 - Post-Battle Recovery and Record-Keeping

1030 26 JUL 2000
=============

Logan has his work cut out for him. He has the following wounds to treat:

Griffin
• Abdomen: Scratch wound
• Right Leg: Serious Wound
• Left Leg: Slight Wound

Harris
• Head: Serious Wound

Mitchell
• Left Arm: Scratch Wound

Potato
• Head: Scratch Wound
• Chest: Scratch Wound
• Abdomen: Scratch Wound
• Right Arm: Scratch Wound
• Right Leg: Scratch Wound
• Left Leg: Scratch Wound

Robinson
• Head: Serious Wound

Macron
• Left Arm: Scratch Wound
• Left Leg: Scratch Wound

Klasha
• Head: Serious Wound
• Right Leg: Scratch Wound
• Left Leg: Scratch Wound

Logan treats those with the serious wounds first. He applies all his medical skill to help with their recovery.  He has a doctor's medical kit.

[Perform first aid on Griffin – Asset Level 17 – Difficult (x1) – Target Number 17 – Roll(s): 8] - Success.
[Perform first aid on Harris – Asset Level 17 – Difficult (x1) – Target Number 17 – Roll(s): 12] - Success.
[Perform first aid on Robinson – Asset Level 17 – Difficult (x1) – Target Number 17 – Roll(s): 2] - Success.
[Perform first aid on Klasha – Asset Level 17 – Difficult (x1) – Target Number 17 – Roll(s): 13] - Success.

The group will heal faster as a result of his work but they will still need two day. Luckily no one is planning on going anywhere at the moment.

Logan also treats each of the wounded with antibiotics. Still there is a chance of infection. Most of them have no infection. The exception being Robinson whose head wound becomes infected. Makes you wonder what the primitives dipped their spears in.

After everyone is patched up, it is time to look at the ammo they used. The characters draw from their stocks to replace:

• 5.56mm N: 49
• 7.62mm N: 17
• 9mm P: 10
• 40mm HEDP: 1
• Frag Grenade: 1
• 5.45mm B: 35

The group makes camp for the night, with those not seriously wounded taking turns at guard. The group consumes 27kg of wild food in a quiet meal within the confines of the ruined church. The turn on the field cookers so everyone can have a warm meal (8l of ethanol consumed).

Each character receives one Initiative experience point.

0800 27 JUL 2000
=============
The next day dawns bright and early. The team decide to take it easy. The only issue of the day is the bodies of the primitives, which they dump back in the sewers, resulting in a period of hard work for the crew.

Encounter (Territory: Organized, Terrain: Clear) - None.

Logan takes are of wounded, spending 4.5 hours tending their wounds. He may try to treat the infection that Robinson has. Since he used antibiotics before, the task is Average

[Treat Infection – Asset Level 17 – Average (x2) – Target Number 19 (20 always fails) – Roll(s): 7] - Success.

The infection is treated but Robinson will lose the extra two days of healing, meaning he will need will need four days to go to the slight wound level. At the end of the day, the characters recover from their scratch and slight wounds and prepare another hot meal. (27kg of wild food and 8l of ethanol).

0800 28 JUL 2000
=============

The following morning, Mitchell and Potato assess the condition of the OT-64. A lot of work has been done it but the work seems to have been interrupted. To assess the true nature of the damage to the vehicle and its current status, we will ask the GME.

[GME: Has the vehicle been completely repaired – Chaos Rank 5 – 50/50 (50%) - 31% - Yes]

[GME: Does the vehicle have fuel – Chaos Rank 5 – Unlikely (35%) - 50% - No]

[GME: Does the vehicle have ammunition – Chaos Rank 5 – Very unlikely (25%) - 27% - No] -- Got real close on that one.

Knowing what we know, let's look at the circumstances, the vehicle is repaired but has no fuel or ammunition. The characters do not have ammunition but do have fuel. The temptation is great to just take the vehicle and abandon one of the others. They are still smarting from their run-in with the BTR and the HMMWV has a damaged suspension.

Encounter (Territory: Organized, Terrain: Clear) - None.

As the group thinks about the situation, Logan takes cares of the wounded and another hot meal is consumed. (27kg of wild food and 8l of ethanol).

0800 29 JUL 2000
=============
At this point, the characters agreed to mission four days ago. It is likely that the town leaders might have gotten a bit worried about their investment. The mechanic the characters were sent to rescue has been gone even longer. Maybe the GME knows how the town council will proceed.

[GME: Will the town council send another rescue party? - Chaos Rank 5 – Unlikely (35%)  - 3% - Exceptional Yes] - Oh they are definitely going to send someone and it will not just be a couple farmers with shotguns.

[GME: Could the convince the Soviets to assist? - Chaos Rank 5 - 50/50 (50% - seeing as the Soviets are actively hunting survivors, the town council may be able to point the Soviets in the right direction)  - 64% - No] - No Soviets, meaning they still want to keep the whole deal under wraps. It would have to be a patrol from the ORMO then.

Time to roll up a patrol:

Encounter: Military patrol (Polish) unit with 7 troopers. (Observation 16)

=============
"At the end, there were two of them left. They did not look like a threat anymore, just a two souls lost on the waves of the Last War. They were beyond help and the only solace we could offer was to put them down. There was not recoverin' from what they had. The bulb was burned out up there."

0061 - Recovering the OT-64 - Turn 10

1030 26 JUL 2000
=============

"It was like puttin' down rabid dogs. You need to put 'em down quick and make sure that they stayed that way. Just wingin' 'em just made 'em mad. A lot of lead was flyin' but we were close to eliminating the threat. You have to keep remindin' yourself that they were long gone beyond what we called human. Just keep sayin' to yourself over and over."

The team is out of danger. Three primitives remain but two are wounded. Still, as the rules for the encounter dictate, they will just keep coming until they cannot move anymore.

Initiative Step 5

Actions:
  • Potato will bat away the spear and attempt another aimed strike at the primitives head.

Order of Actions:
  • Potato (Agl 4)

Play:
Potato attempts an aimed strike at the head of the Novice Polish primitive #11.

[Aimed strike at the primitive's head – Asset Level 15 – Formidable (x1/2) – Target Number 7 – Roll(s): 16] - As if reading Potato's intention, the primitive dodges the attack, probably saving his life.

Initiative Step 4

0060 - Combat Flow Charts

Often the discussion among T2K V2.2 dissenters centers around what they believe to be the "clunky" rule set. This pertains mostly to combat. I admit that in comparison to other modern rulesets on a d6 basis they may appear overly complicated. However, compared to modern rulesets like D&D, I believe they are not that clunky. I have played a lot of games from the original Traveller, 1st Edition AD&D, Megatraveller, Aftermath and many more and I believe a system can be learned and with experience comes the experience to streamline the rules.

What also helps, I believe, is using flow charts to help you remember all those little steps and details. I have started making some for the T2K v2.2 combat rules and you may find them here.

Again, this is just for my sanity but it would make also me happy if I could also help someone get a better understanding of the rules.

I will occasionally update this as I make more flowcharts.

04.06.2019 - Added more flow charts both unarmed and armed combat as well as small arms fire including automatic fire.

0059 - Recovering the OT-64 - Turn 9

1030 26 JUL 2000
=============

"The tide had turned. We were  pushin' 'em back and workin' on solvin' the problem for good. A lot of blood had been spilled but it is not like we wanted that. They decided to jump us and it was a bad decision. Not a lot of people left in the world but these crazies were definitely not contributin' to the GDP, that is for sure. Still, what a waste."

At the start of the turn it is the nine characters against the remaining seven primitives. Most every one is bleeding from at least one wound, with the exception of Marshall and Logan as well as two of the primitives. Number 15 is smack dab in the middle and has not been hit yet. That is really lucky.

Initiative Step 5

Actions:
  • Potato got winged again and decides for an aimed strike at the primitive's head.

Order of Actions:

  • Potato (Agl 4)

Play:

Potato attempts to an aimed strike at the head.

[Aimed strike at Veteran Polish primitive #2's head – Asset Level 15 – Formidable (x1/2) – Target Number 7 – Roll(s): 1] - Hit. Potato grabs the head of the primitive and begins to squeeze.

The primitive elects to block.

[Block aimed strike – Asset Level 13 – Formidable (x1/2) – Target Number 6 – Roll(s): 16] - Miss. The primitive tries to break free but cannot block the attack.

The damage is 6×2 = 12 and the quick kill roll is 7, resulting in the untimely death of the primitive.

Initiative Step 4

Actions:
  • Macron will fire again at the indestructible Novice Polish primitive #12
  • Mitchell will again fire twice at Novice Polish primitive #18

Order of Actions:
  • Mitchell (Agl 5 – Bulk 5 = 0)
  • Macron (Agl 4 – Bulk 5 = -1)

Play:
Mitchell fires twice at the primitive. The range is Close.

[Shoot twice at Novice Polish primitive #18 – Asset Level 7 – Difficult (x1 – Quick shot at close range) – Target Number 7, 5 on the second shot due to recoil – Roll(s): 11,2] - One hit. Mitchell hits the primitive in the abdomen for 8 points of damage. The primitive remains knocked down and will miss his turn again this round.

Macron fires again at Novice Polish primitive #12. The range is Close.

[Shoot Novice Polish primitive #12 three times – Asset Level 13 – Difficult (x1 - Quick shot at close range) – Target Number 13, 12 on the last shot due to recoil – Roll(s): 3,4,1] - Three hits, including two outstanding successes. Macron also hits the primitive in the right arm twice. Both hits are outstanding successes for 8 x 2 = 16 and 5 x 2 = 10 for a total of 28 points. The other round hits the primitive in the left leg for 10 points of damage. The primitive is truly dead, as he only had 8 points of damage prior to the turn.

Initiative Step 3

Actions:
  • Marshall remains on overwatch
  • Logan will fire two rounds at Novice Polish primitive #19

Order of Actions:
  • Marshall (Agl 5)
  • Wayne Logan (Agl 5 – Bulk 5 = 0)

Play:
Mitchell keeps a close eye on the street.

Logan fires at the primitive. The range is Close.

[Fire twice at Novice Polish primitive #19 – Asset Level 10 – Difficult (x1 – Quick shot at close range) – Target Number 10 – Roll(s): 4,7] - Both rounds hit. One round hits the primitive in the left leg for 9 points of damage. The other hits him in the chest for 6×2 = 12. Even without the quick kill roll, the primitive is dead.

Initiative Step 2

Actions:
  • Robinson will fire five rounds at Novice Polish primitive #18.
  • Griffin will fire two rounds at Novice Polish primitive #15.

Order of Actions
  • Robinson (Agl 7 – Bulk 2 = 5)
  • Griffin (Agl 6 – Bulk 5 = 1)

Play:
Robinson fires at the primitive. The range is Close.

[Fire five times at the primitive – Asset Level 9 – Difficult (x1 - Quick shot at close range) – Target Number 9 – Roll(s): 2,2,1,17,3] - Four hits. The primitive is hit in the chest (10 x 2 = 20), right leg twice (14 and 15) and the left leg (9). The primitive is killed and Robinson's AKR is empty.

Griff fires at his primitive. The range is close.

[Fire twice at the primitive – Asset Level 12 – Difficult (x1 – Quick shot at close range) – Target Number 12, 10 on the second due to recoil – Roll(s): 4,12] - Two hits. The primitive is hit in the right leg (12) and the left arm (7). The primitive is knocked down and will lose his turn.

Initiative Step 1

Actions:
  • Harris will continue to move toward the left flank
  • Klasha will remain aboard the HMMWV
  • Novice Polish primitive #11 will charge Potato with his spear
  • Novice Polish primitive #15 misses his turn, as he is knocked down
  • Novice Polish primitive #20 is reloading his crossbow (2 rounds)

Order of Actions:
  • Novice Polish primitive #11 (Agl 6)
  • Novice Polish primitive #20 (Agl 6)
  • Harris (Agl 5)
  • Klasha (Agl 4)

Play:

Novice Polish primitive #11 charges Potato and attempts to spear him.

[Attack Potato with a spear – Asset Level 9 – Difficult (x1) – Target Number 9 – Roll(s): 6] - Hit. Potato is hit in the chest. The damage is 6 + 3 (1/2 STR) = 9. Potato's vest absorbs 2 (AV 1 x 2) points of damage, leaving 7. The "quick kill" roll is 3, resulting in double damage, leaving Potato with a total of 14. Potato is knocked down but being the refrigerator that he his, he still only has a scratch wound.

Novice Polish primitive #20 continues to reload his crossbow.

Harris moves farther east.

Klasha remains in the HMMWV and presses a bandage to her wounds.

The characters have done away with a few more primitives and have a good chance of surviving.

0058 - Recovering the OT-64 - Turn 8

1030 26 JUL 2000
=============
"I popped the one crazy twice and apparently his body had had enough, even if he hadn't. He didn't get back up and bled out there. I stayed for a bit just to be sure.

Another grenade went off somewhere and I assumed it was our guys since the crazies had not had any up to now, but you never know do you? We had to stop them anyway we could. They were really hyped up on something and were a lot tougher than their emaciated bodies led you to believe. Head shots would kill 'em, that was true, but that is true of everyone. Still, I felt like I was stuck in a zombie movie."

Note: one of the things that always strikes me in T2K is how fast and deadly combat is. Look at the current combat. We have a close quarters battle involving 31 people. After 35 seconds, or 7 turns, there are 14 dead and 13 wounded (including the characters) with only 4 that have escaped injury up to now. Combat is fast and hard and you REALLY need to go prone or get some hard cover. That being said, back to our heroes, as they are the focus of this experiment.

Initiative Step 5

Actions:
  • Potato will rush the primitive with the M9. Apparently he is tired of getting shot.

Order of Actions:
  • Potato (Agl 4)

Play:
Potato rushes the primitive and prepares to give him a good kick.

[Kick Veteran Polish primitive #2 – Asset Level 15 – Difficult (x1) – Target Number 15 – Roll(s): 19] - Miss.

Potato lines up a kick but the primitive manages to avoid the attack.

Initiative Step 4

Actions:
  • Macron will again put another three rounds into Novice Polish primitive #12
  • Mitchell will fire twice at Novice Polish primitive #18

Order of Actions:
  • Mitchell (Agl 5 – Bulk 5 = 0)
  • Macron (Agl 4 – Bulk 5 = -1)

Play:
Mitchell fires twice at the primitive. The range is Close.

[Shoot twice at Novice Polish primitive #18 – Asset Level 7 – Difficult (x1 - Quick shot at close range) – Target Number 7, 5 on the second shot due to recoil – Roll(s): 4,6] - One hit. Mitchell hits the primitive in the right arm for 8 points of damage. The primitive is knocked down and will miss his turn this round.

Macron fires the the primitive in front of him. The range is Close.

[Shoot Novice Polish primitive #12 three times – Asset Level 13 – Difficult (x1 - Quick shot at close range) – Target Number 13, 12 on the last shot due to recoil – Roll(s): 17,19,7] - One hit. Macron also hits the primitive in the right arm for 8 points of damage. The primitive is knocked down and will miss his turn this round, in addition to the fact he is stunned.

Initiative Step 3

Actions:
  • Veteran Polish primitive #2 will fire three rounds at Potato
  • Marshall will go into overwatch and keep an eye on the street
  • Logan will fire two rounds at Novice Polish primitive #19
Order of Actions:
  • Veteran Polish primitive #2 (Agl 7 – Bulk 1 = 6)
  • Marshall (Agl 5)
  • Wayne Logan (Agl 5 - Bulk 5 = 0)

Play:
Finished dodging Potato's attack, the primitive draws a bead on him and fires three rounds. The range is Close.

[Fire at Potato three times – Asset Level 13 – Difficult (x1 - Quick shot at close range) – Target Number 13, 11 on the last shot due to recoil – Roll(s): 9,9,12] - Two hits. One round hits Potato in the chest but his vest stop it. He takes one point of blunt trauma damage. The second round wings his right arm for one point of damage.

Mitchell takes a knee and watches the street to the west.

Logan fires at the primitive. The range is Close.

[Fire twice at Novice Polish primitive #19 – Asset Level 10 – Difficult (x1 - Quick shot at close range) – Target Number 10 – Roll(s): 2,4] - Both rounds hit. Both rounds tear into his right arm for a total of 15 points of damage. The primitive is seriously wounded and knocked down.

Initiative Step 2

Actions:
  • Robinson will fire five rounds at Novice Polish primitive #14.
  • Griffin will clear his jammed weapon.

Order of Actions
  • Griffin (Agl 6)
  • Robinson (Agl 7 - Bulk 2 = 5)

Play:

0055 - Recovering the OT-64 - Turn 5

1030 26 JUL 2000
=============

"Up front things looked desperate. Potato and Mitchell were up but the rest of the guys were on the ground with those savages hackin' at 'em. The showed no signs of lettin' up either, even when they were steppin' over the bodies of their friends, if you can call them that. Them dudes were just crazy, no two ways about it. What we did not know at the time was how many more of them guys were on the way. If we had, we would have probably broken contact."

At the beginning of the turn, the melee upfront is about evenly matched with five against five and wounded on both sides. There is another large group of primitives approaching and it could swing the tide.

Initiative Step 5

Veteran Polish primitive #3 takes 5 fragments (Right arm = 10, Abdomen = 10, Abdomen = 4, Right Leg = 5, Left Leg = 12, Total = 41) and is shredded by the grenade. Novice Polish primitive #16 takes 4 fragments (Right arm = 7, Chest = 4 x 2 = 8, Abdomen = 7, Right Leg = 5, Total = 27). The damage to the chest does not result in a quick kill but the primitive is knocked down. Novice Polish primitive #18 takes one fragment to the right leg for 6 and is knocked down by the combination of concussion and damage.

Six primitives are in the secondary blast radius. Novice Polish primitive #9 takes 1 fragment to the right arm for 1 point of damage. Veteran Polish primitive #2, Novice Polish primitive #12, Novice Polish primitive #19, Novice Polish primitive #20 and Novice Polish primitive #22 all take no fragments.

Note: Klasha has almost no chance to block but she had to try. She has an Agility from 4. The damage from the club is 1D6 + 3 or a minimum of 4 points of damage. Anything but a 1 would mean that she will be knocked down and lose her turn. She at least has a chance to stop the damage before she loses her turn.

The primitive chooses not block, as it is doubtful Mitchell can knock him down. The hit location is the Right Leg (1D6+4 for a non-aimed kick = 4+4 = 8) and the damage is 2 x 1.5 = 3. As expected, the primitive is not knocked down.

Note: you are probably wondering why Mitchell does not just shoot the Primitive. In a curious bit of roleplay fate, her Unarmed Martial Arts asset and her Small Arms - Rifle asset are at the same level (7). The difficulty in both cases is the same (Difficult x1), so she would need a 7 to hit, regardless of the attack. Her strength (4) would result in her having minuses starting with the second shot due to recoil (M16A2 = 3). As I only allow skills to be improved that are actually used, I think it is a good idea for Mitchell to get some hand to hand practice in. She may need it later.

Potato is, on the other hand, a trained hand to hand fighter. His Unarmed Combat Damage is 6 and us Unarmed Melee Combat asset if 15. For this reason, he will attempt an aimed strike for the head. The strike to the head will cause double damage, so he has a good chance of achieving a quick kill.

[Perform an aimed strike at the head of Novice Polish primitive #10 – Asset Level 15 – Formidable (x1/2) – Target Number 7 - Roll(s): 2] - Potato also rolls a hit. The hit location is the head as declare for (6×2 = 12) points of damage. The quick kill roll is 5, resulting in a quick kill.

"Potato ran up to this one guy and popped him once. His head snapped back and he fell. He stayed down after that and I do not mean unconcious  down, I mean like dead down. Definitely not the guy you want to anger."
