0039 - The Battle of Zloczew - Turn 8

0830 23 JUL 2000
=============

We reached the barrier and prepared to continue. There were literally wounded Soviets all over the place. Hard to walk without stepping in something or on someone.

The smoke is now dense and will remain so until Turn 31.

Turn 8 - Initiative Step 5
Actions:
  • Potato, after receiving fire, will empty his L7A2 at Experienced Soviet straggler #25
  • Mitchell will continue to steer Bud around to the south.
  • Robinson will cross the barrier and take cover near Potato

Order of Actions:
  • Robinson (Agl 7)
  • Mitchell (Agl 5)
  • Potato (Agl 4 - Bulk 6 = -2)

Play:
Robinson crosses the barrier and takes cover at the corner of a builing before looking up the street and trying to identify Potato's target.

Mitchell continues to steer Bud west. The vehicle maintains its current speed. Since Mitchell is moving faster than than the safe combat speed (8m/turn), she needs to make a check.
  • [Make a driving test – Asset Level 8 – Difficult (x1) – Target Number 8 - Roll(s): 17] - Failure but not a catarstrophic one.

Bud slides into a culvert that Mitchell did not see. The trip is suddenly over. Bud is stuck at the moment and will remain so until Mitchell can find some way of freeing the vehicle.

Potato drops in place and fires two bursts at Experienced Soviet straggler #25. The range is 35m (Short).
  • [Fire a 10 round burst at the straggler – Asset Level 15 – Impossible (x1/4) – Target Number 3 - Roll(s): 16] - Catastrophic failure..

Potato gets one round off and the L7 jams. The one round is also a miss, to make things worse.

[Normally, I try to keep down the number of jams because of catastrophic failures, because everyone spends a lot of time clearing jams. Of course, once can argue years of poor maintenance, substandard ammunition and a whole lot of other reason for so many jams. It does, however, lower the fun factor and that is more important. Unfortunately, Potato rolled 5 catastrophic failures, two if which were natural 20's, so something had to happen.]

Turn 8 - Initiative Step 4
Actions:
  • Griffin will dismount and continue on foot.
  • Macron will swing to the north, hearing firing coming from that direction

Order of Actions:
  • Griffin (Agl 6)
  • Macron (Agl 4)

Play:
Griffin curses the sudden stop before throwing open the door and continuing on foot.

Macron turns north and works his way behind the building.

Turn 8 - Initiative Step 3
Actions:
  • Marshall will follow to the north.
  • Logan will board the HMMWV
  • Harris will fire two bursts at Novice Soviet straggler #115 in the building to the west.
  • Experienced Soviet straggler #03 will fire two quick shots at Harris
  • Experienced Soviet straggler #37 will fire two bursts at Harris

Order of Actions:
  • Logan (Agl 5)
  • Marshall (Agl 5)
  • Experienced Soviet straggler #37 (Agl 6 - Bulk 3 = 3)
  • Experienced Soviet straggler #03 (Agl 6 - Bulk 4 = 2)
  • Harris (Agl 5 - Bulk 6 = -1)

Play:
Logan boards the HMMWV and prepares to roll out.

Marshall moves north, following Macron.

Experienced Soviet straggler #37 will fire two bursts from his M231 at Harris. The range is 40m (Medium). Harris has his arms and head visible, as he is preparing to fire. The first burst is reduced by 2 due to the range.
  • [Fire a burst at Harris – Asset Level 11 – Impossible (x1/4) – Target Number 2 - Roll(s): 11, 6, 8] - All miss.

The second burst is reduced by two additional rounds due to recoil.
  • [Fire a second burst at Harris – Asset Level 11 – Impossible (x1/4) – Target Number 2 - Roll(s): 16] - Miss.

Experienced Soviet straggler #03 will fire two quick shots form his FN-FAL at Harris. The range is 40m (Short). Harris has his arms and head visible, as he is preparing to fire.
  • [Fire a quick shot at Harris – Asset Level 11 – Difficult (x1 - Quick shot at Close range) – Target Number 11 (9 for the second shot due to recoil)  - Roll(s): 11, 16] - One possible hit.

The round impacts on the wall at the level of Harris' legs. Saved by the wall.

Harris fires two bursts at Novice Soviet straggler #115 in the building to the west. The range is 40m (Short).
  • [Fire a burst at the Soviet Straggler  – Asset Level 9 – Impossible (x1/4) – Target Number 2  - Roll(s): 10,16,18,8,13,2,10,4,14,20 ] - One possible hit.

The NPC has his head and arms exposed. The round impacts on the wall below his head, resulting in a miss.

Two NPCs are in the danger zone, which has a burst size of 4.
  • [Burst danger zone  – Asset Level 9 – Impossible (x1/4) – Target Number 2  - Roll(s): 12,13,11,16] - All miss.

Time for the second burst.
  • [Fire a burst at the Soviet Straggler  – Asset Level 9 – Impossible (x1/4) – Target Number 2  - Roll(s): 8,9,11,2,7,13,9,2,10,9 ] - Two possible hits.

The NPC has his head and arms exposed. One round hits the NPC in the left arm for 11 points of damage. The NPC is knocked down and his initiative reduced to 0, taking him out of the fight.

Two NPCs are in the danger zone, which has a burst size of 4.
  • [Burst danger zone  – Asset Level 9 – Impossible (x1/4) – Target Number 2  - Roll(s): 4,16,6,10] - All miss.

Turn 8 - Initiative Step 2
Actions:
  • Experienced Soviet straggler #25 again fire two rounds at Potato

Order of Actions:
  • Experienced Soviet straggler #25 (Agl 6 - Bulk 5 = 1)

Play:
Experienced Soviet straggler #25 fires two quick shots at Potato. The range is 35m (Close)
  • [Fire at Potato – Attribute Level 11 – Difficult (x1 - Quick shot at close range) – Target Number 11 (9 on the second round due to recoil - Roll(s): 7,3] - Both are possible hits.

Potato is prone and one round misses because the hit location was a leg. The other round hits his right arm for 11 points of damage (Scratch). Potato will miss his next turn.

Turn 8 - Initiative Step 1
Actions:
  • Klasha will remain in the HMMWV, nursing her wounds
  • Novice Soviet straggler #110 will take cover in the building
  • Novice Soviet straggler #137 will throw an anti-tank grenade at Harris.

Order of Actions:
  • Novice Soviet straggler #110 (Agl 6)
  • Novice Soviet straggler #137 (Agl 6)

Play:
Novice Soviet straggler #110 moves into the building and replaces his fallen comrade Novice Soviet straggler #115.

Novice Soviet straggler #137 throws an anti-tank grenade at Harris. The range is 40m (Long).

[Note: of course it may seem like overkill, but the grenade has the same stats against a soft target, in this case Harris, as a fragmentation grenade. There is a method to my madness. It is enough if Harris is in the blast radius.]
  • [Throw grenade at Harris – Attribute Level 9 – Formidable (x1/2) – Target Number 4 - Roll(s): 18] - Catastrophic failure.

How to handle this one. On one hand, the most obvious catastrophic option would be for the grenade to bounce back, landing at his feet. Another possible would be to double the deviation. A random roll decides for the second option.

The grenade falls short (6) by 8 (2 x 4) meters. Harris is protected by the corner of the building but he was firing. His head, arms and chest are exposed. He takes 5 points of concussion (Head 2, Chest 1, Right Arm 1, Left Arm 1). Novice Soviet straggler #110 also takes 5 points of concussion damage.

Harris is in the primary burst radius. The same hit locations mentioned above may also catch fragments. Luckily, Harris only is in danger from one fragment but it hits the wall near his leg.

A random roll determines that Novice Soviet straggler #110 is in the secondary blast radius but he his not hit by fragments. His other comrades are also in danger in the secondary blast radius.

Experienced Soviet straggler #37 is within the blast radius and takes one fragment to right arm for six points of damage.

A random roll determines Experienced Soviet straggler #03 is not in the blast radius.

Novice Soviet straggler #110 is within the blast radius but takes no fragments.

Another random roll determines that Novice Soviet straggler #137 is not within the blast radius.

Griffin is protected by the corner of the building and Potato by the sandbags. They receive no hits.

At the end of the turn, only three NPCs are unwounded. Klasha, Potato and Harris are wounded, although most of the wounds of Harris are scratches, the concussion moved his chest wound up to near serious. He needs to watch out in the future.

On the map, I changed those with Initiative of 0 to orange, to help me keep better track of them.
