0170 - Drop-In Encounter #1

Something I have been rolling around in my head for a while: drop-in encounters. The idea is to have a fully-developed but generic encounter that can be used to replace the standard encounters from the card deck. No references to specific areas or groups is given, to allow you to adopt this to your background. A table is provided that details the statistics of the each member of the group encountered and each encounter also includes a random table of Encounter Nuggets to get you started.

Feedback would be appreciated, if you have the time.

Military Patrol

A military patrol is operating in your area. The patrol seems competent enough and seem to be actively scouring the area for armed groups and soldiers like you.

Encounter Nuggets

Roll randomly or choose one of the possible situations below as your starting point for th encounter:

  1. The patrol is an enemy patrol looking to locate and destroy small enemy units. The patrol will actively seek to ambush and destroy the characters.
  2. The patrol (1-3 friendly, 4-6 enemy) is actively hunting a large group of marauders and have no interest in engaging the characters. The will seek to question the characters regarding the whereabouts of the marauders and will defend themselves if attacked. They would be willing to offer the characters half of the haul if they assist in destroying the marauder base
  3. As above, but the patrol is intent on infiltrating the marauder base and kidnapping its leader. If it can be done quietly, the patrol is willing to offer the group two cases with 20 rations of Field Rations
  4. One of the patrol members is a courier and the rest are escorting him. His backpack contains the plans for an enemy offensive in the fall, after the harvest, in order to destroy enemy stocks of food. The lack of food will weaken the support of the civilian population in the affected areas and hopefully force the enemy out.
  5. As above but the courier is carrying data on the enemies supply convoys and one will be passing nearby the following day. The characters have the opportunity so strike before the enemy can change their plans.
  6. The patrol is friendly and is moving to establish a checkpoint. The checkpoint will provide the characters with a safe place to camp, allowing them to sleep soundly for the next few days, if they choose to stay.

  1. Seems workable. You might have a roll to vary the number of troops, or the presence/absence of horses. Another "nugget" roll might be their fatigue and/or supply levels?

  2. Hello Lee,

thank you for your feedback. The idea is not to present a random table to roll on the encounter but rather a fully detailed group as an encounter. The details of their equipment and so I have already developed using an encounter table. The idea is that you can take this encounter and use it immediately.

The nuggets serve to help jog your imagination so the it does not develop into a "oh, we encountered another patrol, just like that last three" kind of situation.

Detailing an encounter can take time and this is a mechanism to help GMs save that time.

  3. This pretty good!

Conceptually, the idea is similar to how "adventuring party" results in AD&D are handled — to get most out of it, you need several of these developed fully to just drop in (classed individuals with specific equipment and magic items, their henchmen and hirelings, and some idea of their motivation and tactics). The idea works there quite well, and I see no reason why it wouldn't work with T2K4.

  4. I believe so too and I am working on a mashup of the different frameworks from the versions v1, v2.2 and v4. The card system is great when you need that quick encounter but does become somewhat repitive after a while. Thank you for your feedback.
