0162 - Going Native - Part VI (Crossing the T's)

 12:00 20 AUG 2000, Near Lubliniec, Poland

===================================

"Wally came back and looked like he had to put down his favorite 'coon dog. Bud had taken us everywhere wanted to go and done more than we could ask. The last firefight showed that we needed some hard cover between us and the bullets and he wasn't going to be able to provide that. He looked a lot like a OD version of Swiss Cheese. Sad to see him go."

First of all, thank you and shout out for the team from Free League. The dropped the Core Set using DriveThruRPG. Thank you team!

With the beta version, FL added rules for experience and it is about time to allow the team a well-deserved reward. The fought hard and can now gain some experience. I think it is probably easier to use a table. For each relevant point, an X:

I gave both Griff and Robinson a bonus for their successful attack on the BTR before going down in a hail of bullets. I think they deserve the extra point for that.

In addition,  I had to add additional check boxes to my character sheet to show which skills had been used. This is important for new skills the characters wish to gain.

Next stop on the experience train is the Coolness Under Fire. I added the check box to show when the team members had used their CUF to make a roll AND succeeded. The flip-side is, of course, the chance of the Empathy score dropping. That could have consequences later.

To make the roll, you have to roll a 1 on your base dice to improve your CUF score.

Not as easy as it would sounds. The larger the die, the lower your chance of rolling a 1 (D6 16.6%, D8 12.5%, D10 10%, D12 8.3%). The team has been doing well up to now with their CUF scores and rolls. Let's hope it continues.

Next on the agenda: Unit Morale. I think everyone would agree that the team fought hard and defeated their enemies and it would be justified to raise the Unit Morale by 1, to A. This will help those with lower CUF scores, like Wally, the next time the lead starts flying. Following that, time to reset the checkboxes for the skills and the CUF.

Now that the record keeping is done, on with the normal travel routine.

The team did not get far before being ambushed. The firefight itself was also short (three rounds), so we can assume that this all took place during the Morning Shift. We can continue with the Day Shift then.

Day Shift

Weather:

The weather remains fair with a light wind blowing through the camp.

Light Conditions:

The conditions are light.

Activities:

A lot of the team is shot up and hurting bad, reducing the amount of activities that they can realistically perform but we will work with what we have.

  • Klasha will stand watch
  • Marshall, assisted by Iov, will prepare food for the group
  • Wally, assisted by Potato, will see what can be rescued/re-used/repaired on the BTR
  • All the others will rest

The BTR took a hit from the TOW fired by Robinson. In addition to the damage that killed the Gunner and Commander, the vehicle has suffered damage to the radio, engine and fuel tank. The front armor is degraded by 1, reducing it to 3.

Note: the engine block would have stopped the remaining damage so the suspension is not destroyed. This was an error on my part.

Not it is time to make a difficult decision. The BTR could possibly be repaired with parts from the truck and it would make a valuable asset. I think the time has come to part ways with our 3/4-ton truck Bud.

First of all, we should probably scavenge the radio in the BTR. Both vehicles took a radio hit but we need to have one of the radios working. Wally as our lead grease monkey gets the honors, assisted by Potato.

Task:

Scavenge the BTR Radio

Ability Die:

Intelligence B (D10)

Skill Die:

Tech B (D10)

Modifiers:

Roll:

Result:

Success

Three successes leave Wally with three Electronic Spare Parts. That should help him repair the radio from Bud. Again, Potato will help him and he has tools

Task:

Repair the Radio

Roll:

Result:

Success

The radio is repaired, consuming one Electronic Spare Part, leaving Wally with two. Now we just need a vehicle to put it in. The scavenging and repair take a shift, so that is all for Wally for this shift.

Navigation:

This is not applicable, as the group is not travelling.

Hazards:

n/a

Encounters:

No encounters this shift. All is quite on the Polish Front.

Record Keeping:

The team sets down to lunch and consumes a total of ten rations of water and domestic food. Food is not the problem but water will soon become a problem.

The wounded have some time to recover and Logan, Griff, Robinson and Macron gain but a point of hit capacity. Maron has now fully recovered. Robinson recovers all his hit capacity but is still suffering from the critical hits he received during the battle. Logan, Griff, Harris, Robinson and Macron also recover a point of Stress. They needed a break and had the chance to decompress for a bit.

Evening Shift

Late afternoon and early evening now. A few things can still be done but the night guard shift needs to settle down so they are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for their shift.

Weather:

Clouds roll in a bit and the weather becomes cloudy. No rain yet though.

Light Conditions:

The light conditions remain Light.

Activities:

  • Klasha will get some shut eye so she can stand watch night.
  • Macron will take over standing watch
  • Marshall and Iov will forage for water
  • Wally and Potato will scavenge the 3/4-ton truck for vehicle parts
  • All others will rest

Forage for Water

Ammo Die:

Roll:

5,8,--

Result:

Success

Marshall and Iov find a water source and refill the teams canteens.

Note: The player's handbook mentions the following regarding foraging for water "When foraging for water, success means that you find enough drinkable water to fill your water bottles. (Pg. 146)". I assume this means that you find a ration of water for all of your respective people. Clarification and the ability to carry and store additional water would be nice. Alternatively one could use the 20l Jerry Can I mentioned in Post 0128 and assume that they hold 10 rations (2l per person) of water.

Now come the heart breaker: scavenging Bud.

Task:

Scavenge vehicle parts from Bud

Ability Die:

Intelligence B (D10)

Skill Die:

Tech B (D10)

Modifiers:

Mod. Skill Die:

[Unmodified]

Ammo Die:

--

Roll:

9,5,--

Result:

Success

One success but Wally can surely do better than that. Time to push the roll.

Task:

Scavenge vehicle parts from Bud (Pushed)

Ability Die:

Intelligence B (D10)

Skill Die:

Tech B (D10)

Modifiers:

Mod. Skill Die:

Tech B (D10)

[Unmodified]

Ammo Die:

--

Roll:

8,10,--

Result:

Success

This gives us a total of three vehicle parts for the three successes. Sorry Bud but your sacrifice will be remembered.

Navigation:

n/a

Hazards:

n/a

Encounters:

No encounter this shift.

Record Keeping:

Klasha gets a shift of sleep. Logan recovers another point of hit capacity and is completely healed. Griffin recovers a point of hit capacity and stress and becomes fully recovered in both categories. Harris and Robinson both recover another point of stress and now only have their critical wounds to worry about.

Night Shift

Time to bed down for the night. Klasha keeps watch and the others work on cutting down all the trees in the forest, sawing away the entire night.

Weather:

The weather remains cloudy but dry. No rain tonight.

Light Conditions:

The light condition changes to Dusk.

Activities:

  • Klasha keeps watch
  • All others are sleeping.

Navigation:

n/a

Hazards:

n/a

Encounters:

No encounters during the night.

Record Keeping:

All team members, with the exception of Klasha, get a shift of sleep. Potato recovers a point of Stress.

The night passes uneventfully and the team gets some well-deserved rest.

  1. Is that shift-tracking mat in the new rulebook? I haven't had a chance to get into it yet.

  2. Actually no. I got the idea because I, like you, saw another player use the same thing and asked him where I could get one. He told he had made it himself so I did the same. The document is made in LibreOffice Impress with the text copied out of the PDF of the Player's Handbook and the picures and logos copied out as well. The background is the Southern Poland map.

  3. Hey there! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment form? I'm using the same blog platform as yours and I'm having trouble finding one? Thanks a lot!
